AWL is run by a team made up of Executive and Non-Executive members representing both family and non-family:
Doug re-joined the board of AWL in 2011 and is the current Managing Director. He has extensive retail and property development experience and having successfully developed the companies former anchor store in Shandwick Place has a particular interest in major projects. He is currently chairman of Wilkies Fashion and Managing Director of Mansworld Glasgow. Doug is married with 2 children and is happiest in the water, surfing, sailing or windsurfing, but still manages to fit in the odd round of golf.
Andrew joined the board in May 2009. With a background in corporate tax gained within international accountancy practices Andrew is a director of several companies and a Managing Partner with Johnston Carmichael chartered accountants. Andrew also has his own family farming business and when he is not working enjoys Scottish hill walking and hill running.
After training and working as a nurse, Fiona (nee Wilkie) became a director of the family business in 1993 and Company Secretary in 2002. As Company Secretary Fiona looks after company finance and compliance. When not working Fiona enjoys family and friends, cooking and baking and pretty much anything related to sport and the outdoors.
Niall Macalister Hall
Niall rejoined the Board in 2017 and is a qualified Chartered Surveyor with over 20 years experience in the management, sale and valuation of property in Scotland. He runs his own estate in Kintyre, which includes a small-batch gin distillery, producing the award-winning Kintyre Gin.
Elspeth became the company’s Management Accountant in 2009. She trained as an accountant in Edinburgh and provides Management Accountant services to several organisations through her own business. Elspeth is married with 2 children and when not working is a semi-professional barbershop singer and sings and dances with the medal winning ladies Forth Valley Chorus and Mac4 Quartet and has appeared in Britain’s Got Talent! She also enjoys anything outdoors and especially dog walking.
Brigid joined the board in December 2016. She is an experienced board director and a business consultant and coach, specialising in Strategy, Digital Innovation, Decision Making and Governance through her company Envision Business Solutions. Brigid is a trustee of Tong-Len UK a charity that helps to transform the lives of slum families in India and enjoys walking, writing and family.
Jack became a co-opted member of the Board in 2015. He received First-Class Honours in an Undergraduate Masters of Mathematics in June 2017. Currently Jack does some freelance Maths tuition and emergency support care work whilst exploring future career opportunities. As a member of the company’s fifth generation, the Board actively encourage and respect Jack’s views and opinion.
Holly is currently studying Economics at the University of St Andrews. She was invited to join AWL as a co-opted member of the Board in 2015. Over the years she has worked in Wilkies doing various jobs and has shown a keen interest in the company and its affairs. She lends a 5th generation’s perspective to the board.
